How To Remove Burn Scars?

Burn scars are mostly brown in color. However, in some cases these may also have a reddish brown look. Burn scars and even other scars caused due to injury or healed acne is noticeable and gives an ugly look. Dermatologists are of the view that the color of the scars or their texture and their severity depends upon a number of factors. These factors include genetic factors, tone of the skin and depth of the wound caused due to the burn or injury. These in medical terms are also called hyper-pigmentation. These can be of tightened dark contracture or can also be round and puffy keloid.

Though small scars can be treated using home remedies or medicated creams available as over the counter drugs, but for treatment of bigger and puffy scars a dermatologist needs to be consulted.

  • If you have puffy scars it is better to consult your doctor about wearing compressing garments. These are tight garments worn for a period of 23 to 24 hours in a day. These prevent the scars from puffing and these remain flat and easy to treat.
  • To get rid of flat scars, scar cream containing silicone can be applied. Silicon sheet can also be tied on the scar affected part. These helps to lighten the scars, soften the skin and refine them. With the softening of scar tissues the severity of appearance is also reduced. This should be applied at least twice a day. When the scar cream has been absorbed, antioxidant serum should be applied. Creams containing natural antioxidants like green tea extract or liquorice or grape extracts are best. These help even out the skin and reduce the look of marks. Let the cream dry out before going out.
  • Sunscreen is essential to prevent the brown scar from darkening further. As far as possible cover the affected parts with a thick cloth. This will prevent further burning or darkening due to ultraviolet lights. Considering the severity of the weather application of sunscreen can be repeated after a few hours. Sunscreen with high SPF can be considered.
  • Peeling of the skin with a peeling lotion can help lighten the scars. This should normally be applied at night time. Apply a thin layer of the cream on the affected part. Let it dry and wash with tap water. After patting it dry silicon scar cream should be reapplied.
  • Though not recommended, steroid injections can help eradication in extreme cases. These medicines are injected on monthly basis and have remarkable effect. The drawback is that after use of these medicines sometimes the body becomes resistant to certain life saving drugs.
  • Plastic surgery can be another way out. This is painful and expensive process but is effective. Where other methods of treatment have failed and scar covering is a must, this surgical treatment can be given a try.
